Tips for Naming Your Baby
15 Things to Consider When You Name Your Baby - Part 2
4. Gender
Some parents feel that a unisex name like Robin, Pat, Chris, Carol/Caroll or Leslie, Lesley, allows them to pick a name with certainty before they know the sex of the baby, and that such names are less likely to "type" children in sex roles than traditional gender-specific names. Others argue that it is a nuisance to require a child explain what sex he or she is. And, gender confusion can cause psychological damage, though studies indicate boys tend to feel more threatened when they are presumed to be girls than vice-versa.
5. Number of Names
Most bureaucratic forms provide spaces for a first name, a middle name and a last name - but there's no law stating a person has to have three names. There are lots of options: a first and last name only, a first and last name and a middle initial (like Harry S. Truman's S is just an S), initials for both first and middle names, or severla middle names. But if you're thinkin gof more than three names, think of the problems your child will face every time he or she fills out a form.
6. Sounds
Some names seem to sound better in combination with a last name than others.
For example, Julius Caesar sounds better than Jules Caesar and is easier to say. Alliteration, as in Tina Turner or Pat Pualsen, is fine, but rhymes like Jack Black or Wanda Fonda invite teasing. Punning names and other displays of wit may sound funny, but living with a joke name is no laughing matter.
